At least Jesus gave his disciples a “heads up” regarding the mission trip he was sending them on. There would be no surprises.
On the one hand, he told them they would perform miraculous healings, deliverances, and resurrections as they preached the good news. But, he warned them, they would also be beaten, arrested and brought before kings and governors. They would be hated because of him.
What a “heads up!”
Jesus assured them, “do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20
Lord, you send us out to share the good news of sins forgiven and salvation won with our neighbors near and far. Forgive us for balking at your mission commission, for sealing our lips rather than speaking the truth. Grant us the assurance that the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say at the right time–words that come from you! For your words “are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.” (Psalm 12:16) Open our hearts and our mouths and accomplish your mission vision through us –that “all might be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” (I Timothy 2:4) Lord God, grant it for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
