Numbers 33:40-35:34; Luke 5:12-28; Psalm 65:1-13; Proverbs 11:23
Imagine no E.R.s, no Urgent Care, no rehab facilities or hospitals. If you or a loved one suffered from any kind of incurable disease you were relegated to “outside the community.” You lost connections with family, friends and even God since ‘unclean’ persons could not come near places of worship. Your illness cut you off from everything! You probably were dying from loneliness as well.
Then comes Jesus. He touches you, heals you, restores you, gives your life back to you. Life is good again and you want to tell everyone about the Healer even though Jesus orders you “Don’t tell anyone.” Luke 5:14
As a result “the news about him spread(s) all the more, so that crowds of people come to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.” Luke 5:15
Because of the demand and press of the crowds of people Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16
He talked with his Father. And listened. And obeyed.
Jesus knew that his mission in life was not only to bring healing to the masses, but to proclaim the forgiveness of sins–a healing much greater and complete.
That’s why it was important for Jesus to say to the paralyzed man “Friend, your sins are forgiven” and THEN “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” Luke 5:20,24 The man went home healed in body and more importantly in his soul.
Jesus still desires that everyone be whole in mind, body and spirit. And while our bodies and our minds may remain weak this side of Heaven we are assured that our sins are forgiven TODAY–“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
We can enjoy the peace of God that passes all understanding no matter what circumstances surround us!
Lord God, thank you for sustaining your Son, Jesus, during his earthly ministry when the demands on him were so great. Thank you that he remained faithful to the work he was sent to do–to live a perfect life in obedience to You and then to be the perfect sacrifice for all our sins. Thank you that along the way he brought healing for minds, bodies and spirits to untold men, women and children. Thank you that your healing extends to us today.
Above all we thank you for the greatest healing of all–restoring us to a right relationship to You through Your son Jesus Christ. For this we give you thanks and praise. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
“Oh you who hear our prayers,
to you all men will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins,
you forgave our transgressions.” Psalm 65:2-3
