March 28 ‘Miracle Gro’ Heart

Deuteronomy 9:1-10:22;  Luke 8:4-21;  Psalm 69:19-36;  Proverbs 12:2-3

“And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, ‘A sower went out to sow his seed….'” Luke 8:4-5

Jesus looked at all the people who flocked to hear him speak and knew that his words would fall on deaf ears, worried ears, eager but immature ears, and humble ears.  How he wished that his words–the seed of the gospel–would fall into fertile soil and bear much fruit for the Kingdom.

Jesus knew the nature of human hearts and explained them to his disciples, “The seed is the word of God.  The ones along the path are those who have heard, then the devil comes….the ones on the rock are those who when they hear the word receive it with joy..but have no root…in times of testing they fall away.  As for what fell among thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by cares of this life.  As for that in good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold fast in an honest and good heart and bear fruit with patience.”  Luke 8:11-15

I like to think of my heart as the Miracle Gro heart—one changed by the miracle of faith imparted to me at my Baptism through water and the word;  fed and sustained with the ‘Miracle Gro’ of my Savior’s Body and Blood in the Lord’s Supper; nurtured with daily devotions and prayer;  strengthened by regular fellowship and worship with other believers; and pruned by a loving Heavenly Father through life’s trials and challenges.

It’s a ‘Miracle Gro’ heart though I’ve given in to sin and Satan’s temptations; though, not fallen completely away, have strayed from my Good Shepherd; though worries, fears and doubts tried to choke out my faith, it’s a heart that grows because it has received mercy upon mercy, grace upon grace from my Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s a ‘Miracle Gro’ heart that experiences the joy and peace that passes all human understanding–and that in time will bear much fruit.

Lord God,  Thank you for being the Faithful Sower;  for preserving your Word in truth and purity; for sharing it with the world through your Son, Jesus Christ.  Thank you for the miracle of faith that you planted in our hearts by Baptism and sustain through the Lord’s Supper–Your Body and Blood given for us.

May we joyfully take up the task of sowing the seed of the Gospel and pray for a fruitful harvest.  In Jesus’ Name we pray.  Amen

“A man cannot be established through wickedness,

but the righteous cannot be uprooted.”  Proverbs 12:3
