February 15 Nailed the Gold

Exodus 39:1-40:38;  Mark 1:1-28;  Psalm 35:1-16;  Proverbs 9:11-12

Yuzuru Hanyu, the 19 year old Japanese skater, thrilled us with his  flawless spins, artistic footwork, and breathtaking jumps–all according to detailed plans and endless hours of practice.  Though not without a few mistakes, Hanyu’s performance came the closest to perfection and he was awarded the highest honor–the Olympic Gold!

Hunyu’s quest for skating perfection reminds me of God’s demand for perfection as detailed in the book of Exodus.  It was God’s desire to be near and among the desert dwelling nation of Israel as it trekked towards the land promised to them.

God gave detailed instructions to his servant, Moses, for a special dwelling place that He Himself would occupy and make His Presence known.  And Moses, with God’s help, ‘nailed the program’:

Step by step

“as the Lord commanded Moses”

Stitch by stitch

“as the Lord commanded Moses”

Blow by hammered blow

“as the Lord commanded Moses”

Etch by skilled etch

“as the Lord commanded Moses”

Nail by nail

“as the Lord commanded Moses”

“Thus the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was finished,

and the people of Israel did according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses.”

“And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the Lord commanded,

so they had done it.  Then Moses blessed them.”  Exodus 39:32,43

Moses and the people beheld the bestowing of the “Gold”:

“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle…For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.”  Exodus 40:34,38

Lord, it’s exciting to watch the world’s athletes perform to the best of their ability and be honored for their quest for perfection.  It reminds us that you also demand perfection and that we fall short of it.  But your Word also reminds us that you provided the way for perfection through your Son, Jesus Christ.  Through faith in Him you see His perfect performance in us.  Through Him we receive the “Gold” of Heaven.  Like the perfect tabernacle that housed your glory in the desert, our hearts now house your very presence through faith.  Thank you for making your home with us–for your love and mercy that never ends!  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
