Jeremiah 16:16-18:23;  1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3;  Psalm 81:1-16;  Proverbs 25:6-7

‘Stand by me,’ was the prophets cry.

Surrounded by self-centered,

stiff-necked people

who carried on the trappings

of religious devotion,

but whose hearts were

cold as stone,

God’s spokesman, Jeremiah,

labored heavily under

verbal assault,

rejection

and ridicule,

yet remained faithful.

God in His mercy,

gave him strength and perseverance

to day-after-day speak on

His behalf,

to speak His words of judgement,

and calls to repentance

and promises to

forgive,

restore,

and heal

if His people would

renounce their sinful ways

and look to Him.

~

Jeremiah calls out to God:

“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;

save me, and I shall be saved,

for you are my praise.

Behold, they say to me,

“Where is the word of the Lord?

Let it come!”

I have not run away from being your shepherd,

nor have I desired the day of sickness.

You know what came out of my lips;

it was before your face.

Be not a terror to me;

you are my refuge in the day of distress.

Let those be put to shame

who persecute me,

but let me not be put to shame;

let them be dismayed,

but let me not be dismayed.”

Jeremiah 17:14-18

Lord God, just as you stood by the prophet Jeremiah during the difficult days of speaking your truth to a wayward people, please be with all ministers of your Word, who declare your word of Law and Gospel, repentance and forgiveness, darkness and light.  Sustain missionaries both near and far; give them the strength needed to bear up under very difficult circumstances.  And be with us, today, Lord.  Help us remain faithful bearers of your Truth which we receive by faith, even though many around us spurn us and turn their backs against us.  Grant that we remember our Savior’s rejection, and His dogged determination to get the work of Salvation done for us.  If we must suffer, let us remember that Jesus, “counted it all joy”-even his death on the Cross.  Thank you, O Lord for your strength and love that fills us and helps us to stand.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

**Thank and praise God for your pastor during October’s Pastor Appreciation Month.  Show your love and appreciation in a special way!

  1. Thanks Wendy. I just can’t imagine how hard a job it was for Jeremiah to continually preach to such hard hearted people. Our Pastors need our prayers more than ever! God bless your week! ~ Laura
