Genesis 18:20-19:38;  Matthew 6:25-7:14;  Psalm 8:1-9;  Proverbs 2:6-15

Inhaling self-help books

devouring,

practicing

slaving,

one after the other

in my younger years

yielded

no more

peace

or lasting

effects

than painting my

nails

and watching the

color

fade,

chip,

wear away

with each passing day.

****

Graciously, the Lord

of Heaven and Earth

bid me come,

to let Him

transform

my selfish,

controlling,

narrow minded

life

into one reflecting

the fruits

of faith in Him:

love,

joy,

peace,

patience,

goodness,

faithfulness,

gentleness,

self-control.

***

It’s a life

being

transformed

day by day

by the Word of God

and the life of Christ in me

that fails not

to shape me

into

His child.

“For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.  Then you will understand what is right and just and fair–every good path.  For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.  Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.”

Proverbs 2:6-11

Lord, as we move into the New Year we may be tempted to reach for a self-help book to transform our lives.  May we first look to you, absorb and apply Your Word to our lives.  Forgive us our sins–which to the world may look like “areas” in need of improvement, but really are ways or habits that are contrary to your ways that need renouncing.  We need your help to become “holy”–set apart. It’s an ongoing process, Lord.  Please keep us focused on You and not grow faint– grow tired of living for you.  We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
