Genesis 23:1-24:5; Matthew 8:1-17;  Psalm 9:13-20;  Proverbs 3:1-6

“When he (Jesus) came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.  A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, “I am willing,” he said.  “Be clean!”  Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.”  Matthew 8:1-3

Down from the mountain

from speaking and teaching

our Lord came,

along with many

who heard his words,

spoken with a ‘different’

kind of authority

from that of their

“regular” teachers

of the law and the prophets.

Once down upon the plain

in the midst of everyday life

an untouchable came.

The Law taught,

“do not touch!”

but Jesus

He didn’t “have to”–

He could have healed with a word,

but he chose to show

that it is more important

to touch,

to show that God’s ways

are holy

and to fulfill the scriptures:

“He took up our infirmities,

and carried our diseases.”

We who hear His word

are called to do the same.

To come to the plain,

to touch,

to come alongside

our world’s

they may be.

He can bring healing

and wholeness

in mind,

God grant it,

for Jesus’ sake.
