Jesus, Refuge of the Weary

Jesus, refuge of the weary, blest Redeemer whom we love, Fountain in life’s desert dreary, Savior from the world above;  Often have Your eye, offended, gazed upon the sinner’s fall;  Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all.

Do we pass that cross unheeding, breathing no repentant vow, though we see You wounded bleeding, see Your thorn-encrircled brow?  Yet Your sinless death has brought us life eternal, peace and rest;  only what Your grace has taught us calms the sinner’s deep distress.

Jesus, may our hearts be burning with more fervent love for you; may our eyes be ever turning to behold Your cross anew till in glory, parted never from the blessed Savior’s side, graven in our hearts forever, dwell the cross, the Crucified.

Hymn text by Girolamo Savonarola, 1452-98

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.”  Psalm 51:10-12

On My Heart

Brad Castaneda

On my heart imprint Your image, blessed Jesus, King of grace,

That life’s riches, cares, and pleasures never may Your work erase;

Let the clear inscription be:  Jesus, crucified for me, is my life,

my hope’s foundation, and my glory and salvation!

Text by Thomas Hansen Kingo, 1634-1703

“Make me to know your ways, O Lord;  teach me your paths.  Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation;  for you I wait all the day long.”  Psalm 25:4-5

Balm and Healing

Jesus, grant that balm and healing in Your holy wounds I find, every hour that I am feeling pains of body and of mind.  Should some evil thought within tempt my treach’rous heart to sin, show the peril, and from sinning keep me from its first beginning.

Should some lust or sharp temptation fascinate my sinful mind, draw me to Your cross and passion, and new courage I shall find.  Or should Satan press me hard, let me then be on my guard, saying, “Christ for me was wounded,” that the tempter flee confounded.

If the world my heart entices with the broad and easy road, with seductive, sinful vices, let me weight the awful load you were willing to endure.  Help me flee all thoughts impure and to master each temptation, calm in prayer and meditation.

Every would that pains or grieves me by your wounds, Lord, is made whole;   when I’m faint, Your cross revives me, granting new life to my soul.  Yes, Your comfort renders sweet every bitter cup I meet;  for Your all atoning passion has procured my soul’s salvation.

O my God, my rock and tower, grant that in Your death I trust, knowing death has lost its power since You crushed it in the dust.  Savior, let Your agony ever help and comfort me; when I die be my protection, light and life and resurrection.

Hymn text by Johann Heermann, 1585-1647

Be gracious to me, O Lord for to you do I cry all the day.  Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.  For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.  Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace.  Amen.  Psalm 86:3-6

One

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In Adam we have all been one,

One huge rebellious man;

We all have fled that Evening Voice

That sought us as we ran.

We fled Thee and in losing Thee

We lost our brother too;

Each singly claimed and sought his own;

Each one his brother slew.

But Thy Strong love, it sought us still

And sent us Thine only Son

That we might hear His Shepherd’s voice

And, hearing Him, be one.

O Thou who, when we loved Thee not,

Didst love and save us all,

Thou great Good Shepherd of mankind,

O hear us when we call.

Send us Thy Spirit, teach us truth;

Thou Son, O set us free

From fancied wisdom, self-sought ways,

To make us one in Thee.

Then shall our song united rise

To Thine eternal throne,

Where with the Father evermore

And Spirit Thou art One.

Amen.

Hymn text by Martin H. Franzmann

What the world needs now is…to know the great love of God who sent His only Son to redeem sinful man and restore us to Himself and to one another.  Let that be our prayer today!

God bless your day!

April 1 Make Me See Your Passion

Deuteronomy 18:1-20:20;  Luke 9:28-50;  Psalm 73:1-28; Proverbs 12:10

“While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Listen carefully to what I am going to tell you:  The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.”  But they did not understand what this meant.  It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him.”

Luke 9:43-45

This week is the Passion week of our Lord.  It began with the remembrance of His entrance into Jerusalem on the back of a young donkey.  It includes Jesus’ teaching in the temple to enthralled crowds of eager listeners.  It will highlight Jesus last meal with His disciples, the prayers in the garden and finally the arrest, trial and crucifixion.  Year after year we remember, yet do we really understand the depths of His woe?

Jesus I will ponder now

On your holy Passion;

With your Spirit me endow

For such meditation,

Grant that I in love and faith

May the image cherish

Of your suffering, pain, and death

That I may not perish.

* * * * *

Make me see your great distress,

Anguish and affliction,

Bonds and stripes and wretchedness

And your crucifixion;

Make me see how scourge and rod,

Spear and nails did wound you;

How you died for those, O God,

Who with thorns had crowned you.

* * * * *

Yet, O Lord, not thus alone

Make me see your Passion;

But its cause to me make known

And its termination.

For I also and my sin

Brought your deep affliction;

This the shameful cause has been

Of your crucifixion.

* * * * *

Grant that I your Passion view

With repentant grieving,

Let me not bring shame to you

By unholy living.

How could I refuse to shun

Every sinful pleasure

Since for me God’s only Son

Suffered without measure?

* * * * *

If my sins give me alarm

And my conscience grieve me,

Let your cross my fear disarm,

Peace and pardon give me.

Grant that I may trust in you

And your holy Passion;

If his Son forgives anew,

God must have compassion.

* * * * *

Jesus, Lord, my heart renew,

Let me bear my crosses,

Learning humbleness from you,

Peace despite my losses.

May I give you love for love!

Hear me, O my Savior,

That I may in heaven above

Sing your praise forever!

Open my eyes and my heart, O Lord, to all Your Holy Passion.  For Jesus’ sake, Amen.
