Alas! And did my Savior bleed, and did my sovereign die?  Would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?

Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree?  Amazing pity, grace unknown, and love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide and shut his glories in when God, the mighty maker, died for His own creatures’ sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face while His dear cross appears, dissolve my heart in thankfulness, and melt mine eyes to tears.

But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe; here, Lord, I give myself away: ‘Tis all that I can do.

Hymn Text by Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

“For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” Colossians 1:19-20

Genesis 24:52-26:16;  Matthew 8:18-34;  Psalm 10:1-15;  Proverbs 3:7-8

“Be not wise in your own eyes;

fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

It will be healing to your flesh,

and refreshment to your bones.”

Proverbs 3:7-8

Give it up

Dependence on fate,

crystal balls,

Give it up

Leaning on degrees

Give it up

and turn away

from self-justifying

Jesus gave it up-

His perfect life

for mine.

By His stripes I’ve been healed.

In Him I’m whole and clean.

Thank you, Lord, from turning me from evil and giving me new life.  By the Spirit’s power and the wisdom you give, help me to live wholly dependent on you.  Thank you for all that you provide for daily life.  Above all, thank you for your means of grace in Word and Sacrament that give me strength.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
