Nehemiah 7:61-9:21;  1 Corinthians 9:1-18;  Psalm 33:12-22;  Proverbs 21:11-12

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,

the people he chose for his inheritance.

From heaven the Lords looks down and sees all mankind;

from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth–

he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.

No king is saved by the size of his army;

no warrior escapes by his great strength.

A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;

despite all its great strength it cannot save.

But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,

on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,

to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.

In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord,

even as we put our hope in you.”

Psalm 33:12-22

~

A bank may safeguard

my cash,

but it cannot guard

my life.

Banks fail,

money supplies dwindle,

but the Source of all the living

never runs dry.

Rejoice in the Lord

who makes something

out of nothing;

who feeds thousands

with but a crumb.

He is the same yesterday, today

and forever!

He knows my needs

for food, clothing, shelter

and my deeper needs

for forgiveness, love and mercy.

He never fails.

His mercies are new every morning.

Yes, even for today!

I can bank on that.

Lord God, thank you for your goodness and mercy that never end.  In you I can place all my trust and not be afraid of running out.  Your love endures forever!  May I share your goodness and mercy with those who need to hear a Good Word today.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Genesis 37:1-38:30;  Matthew 12:22-45;  Psalm 16:1-11;  Proverbs 3:27-32

“The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;  you hold my lot.  The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;  indeed I have a beautiful inheritance…Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.  You made known to me the path of life;  in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  Psalm 16:5-6,9,11

What would your “winning ticket” grant you?

$50,000.00 a week for the rest of your life?

A disease free, disaster free life?

A never ending trip around the world?

King David celebrates his “winning ticket”–knowing the One True God who had provided him with a “beautiful inheritance.”  Nothing could compare to being in the presence of God where there was “fullness of joy” and “pleasures forevermore.”

The lottery

The sweepstakes

The winning horse or hand

Offer a “chance” at happiness.

Jesus offers forever peace, true riches, unending pleasures of grace, mercy, forgiveness and love.

Lord God, thank you for gifting us with the “winning ticket” of Salvation.  Thank you for sending Jesus, your Son, who intentionally–and not by chance–won us freedom from sin, death, and the power of Satan.  As your children, we acknowledge you to be the source of all that we need in this life and the life to come.  May we always remember that through our Baptism, we’ve received the “winning ticket”.  Thank you for this “beautiful inheritance.”  In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

2 Kings 23:31-25:30;  Acts 22:17-23:10;  Psalm 2:1-12;  Proverbs 18:13

“I will proclaim the decree of the Lord:

He said to me, “You are my son;

today I have become your Father.

Ask of me,

And I will make the nations your inheritance,

the ends of the earth your possession.

You will rule them with an iron scepter;

you will dash them to pieces like pottery.

Therefore you kings, be wise;

be warned, you rulers of the earth.

Serve the Lord with fear

and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry

and you be destroyed in your way,

for his wrath can flare up in a moment.

Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”
